Al-Fātihah

The Opening

Recited in every unit (rak'ah) of prayer — the most repeated surah in the Quran.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَـٰلَمِينَ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ مَـٰلِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّآلِّينَ

1 بِسْمِ Bismi

In the name

Begins an action in the name of Allah — a declaration of purpose and blessing.

2 اللَّهِ Allāhi

of Allah

The proper name of God in Arabic — al-Ilāh, the one worthy of worship.

3 الرَّحْمَـٰنِ ar-Raḥmāni

the Entirely Merciful

Al-Raḥmān — vast mercy that encompasses all creation without exception.

4 الرَّحِيمِ ar-Raḥīmi

the Especially Merciful

Al-Raḥīm — specific mercy bestowed upon believers. A distinction: one mercy is wide, the other is deep.

5 الْحَمْدُ Al-ḥamdu

All praise

Al-ḥamd is complete, perfect praise — not just thanks, but acknowledging excellence in all its forms.

6 لِلَّهِ lillāhi

belongs to Allah

The lam (لِ) denotes ownership: all praise is for Allah alone, not divided.

7 رَبِّ Rabbi

Lord of

Rabb — the one who nurtures, sustains, and maintains. More than "lord"; it is the source of all provision.

8 الْعَـٰلَمِينَ al-ʿālamīna

all the worlds

ʿĀlamīn — plural of ʿālam, every realm: humans, jinn, angels, animals, and all that exists.

9 الرَّحْمَـٰنِ ar-Raḥmāni

the Entirely Merciful

Repeated from the Basmala — emphasizing this essential quality of Allah.

10 الرَّحِيمِ ar-Raḥīmi

the Especially Merciful

Repeated to affirm that mercy defines how Allah relates to creation.

11 مَـٰلِكِ Māliki

Master of

Mālik — sovereign owner with complete authority, not merely a king but the true owner.

12 يَوْمِ yawmi

the Day

Yawm — a specific, definitive day. The Day of Judgment has no doubt.

13 الدِّينِ ad-dīni

of Recompense

Al-dīn here means accountability and repayment — everything done will be weighed.

14 إِيَّاكَ iyyāka

You alone

Direct address to Allah — grammar shifts from third person to second, a turn toward direct conversation.

15 نَعْبُدُ naʿbudu

we worship

ʿIbādah — worship is complete submission, love, and humility. The essence of the human-God relationship.

16 وَإِيَّاكَ wa-iyyāka

and You alone

The waw (و) joins: both worship and help are directed solely to Allah.

17 نَسْتَعِينُ nastaʿīnu

we ask for help

Istaʿāna — to seek assistance, to acknowledge that we cannot do it alone. A profound admission of dependence.

18 اهْدِنَا ihdinā

Guide us

Hidāyah — divine guidance, the straight path. We ask this every single prayer. The need never ends.

19 الصِّرَاطَ aṣ-ṣirāṭa

the path

Al-ṣirāṭ — a clear, wide road. Not a narrow trail, but a clear way that many travel together.

20 الْمُسْتَقِيمَ al-mustaqīma

the straight

Al-mustaqīm — upright, direct, with no deviation. The path of those whom Allah has favored.

21 صِرَاطَ ṣirāṭa

the path of

Repetition of ṣirāṭ clarifies who walks it: those blessed, not those who earned wrath.

22 الَّذِينَ alladhīna

those whom

A relative pronoun — who are they? Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, the righteous.

23 أَنْعَمْتَ anʿamta

You have blessed

Niʿmah — bounty from Allah. The blessing of guidance is the greatest of all blessings.

24 عَلَيْهِمْ ʿalayhim

upon them

Them — a community across time and place who walked this path before us.

25 غَيْرِ ghayri

not of

Distinction: this path is not the path of two other groups about to be named.

26 الْمَغْضُوبِ al-maghḍūbi

those who earned wrath

Those who knew the truth and rejected it. Knowledge without action.

27 عَلَيْهِمْ ʿalayhim

upon them

Upon them — not us. The separation is intentional and prayerful.

28 وَلَا wa-lā

and not

Nor — adding a second category to avoid.

29 الضَّآلِّينَ aḍ-ḍāllīna

those who are astray

Those who worshipped with sincerity but without correct knowledge. Both errors must be avoided.
