Ṣalawāt
Prayers upon the Prophet
Said after the Tashahhud, sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ.
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

O Allah
A direct invocation — "O Allah." The meem (م) at the end is a compressed form of "yā Allāh."
send blessings
Ṣalāh from Allah means His praise, honor, and mercy. We ask Allah to praise His own Prophet ﷺ.
upon
Directing the blessing to a specific person — the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Muhammad
ﷺ — the Prophet whose name we carry in prayer every single day.
and upon
Extending the blessing beyond the Prophet ﷺ to his family.
the family of
Āl — the family and close followers who carried the message forward.
Muhammad
His family shares in the blessing — those who lived with him and transmitted his example.
just as
The comparison that makes this blessing profound: as great as what was given to Ibrahim.
You sent blessings
Past tense — Allah already blessed Ibrahim ﷺ and his family. This is the standard we invoke.
upon
Upon — directing what was given to Ibrahim to now be given to Muhammad ﷺ.
Ibrahim
The father of prophets — whose blessing is so great we use it as our benchmark.
indeed You are
Affirmation — with full certainty, not doubt.
Praiseworthy
Al-Ḥamīd — the one deserving of all praise. The root of the name Muhammad.
Glorious
Al-Majīd — exalted in honor, noble in essence. A name that cannot be diminished.
