The Testimony

Recited while sitting between or at the end of prayer, bearing witness to faith.

التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَىٰ عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَّا إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

1 التَّحِيَّاتُ At-taḥiyyātu

All greetings

All forms of greeting and honor — verbal, physical, and monetary. Dedicated entirely to Allah.

2 لِلَّهِ lillāhi

are for Allah

All honor belongs to Him — not shared with any creation, no matter how noble.

3 وَالصَّلَوَاتُ waṣ-ṣalawātu

and all prayers

Every act of prayer and worship — all directed to Allah alone.

4 وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ waṭ-ṭayyibātu

and all good things

All good words, deeds, and pure things — their ultimate source and owner is Allah.

5 السَّلَامُ As-salāmu

Peace

The greeting of Islam — peace, safety, and wholeness. Given first to the Prophet ﷺ.

6 عَلَيْكَ ʿalayka

be upon you

Direct address to the Prophet ﷺ across time — this greeting reaches him.

7 أَيُّهَا ayyuhā

O

A vocative particle — calling attention, a mark of respect and directness.

8 النَّبِيُّ an-nabiyyu

the Prophet

An-nabī — one who receives divine news. The messenger who carried the final revelation.

9 وَرَحْمَةُ wa-raḥmatu

and the mercy

Mercy extended to the Prophet ﷺ, and through him, to all who follow.

10 اللَّهِ Allāhi

of Allah

Allah's mercy — infinite, complete, the source of all blessing in existence.

11 وَبَرَكَاتُهُ wa-barakātuh

and His blessings

Barakāt — divine abundance that increases when shared. Blessings without limit.

12 السَّلَامُ As-salāmu

Peace

Now extended to ourselves and all righteous servants — the greeting expands outward.

13 عَلَيْنَا ʿalaynā

be upon us

We include ourselves in the prayer — a shift from witnessing to participating.

14 وَعَلَىٰ wa-ʿalā

and upon

The blessing continues to all righteous servants of Allah everywhere.

15 عِبَادِ ʿibādi

the servants

ʿIbād — worshippers. Those who have given their lives in service and submission.

16 اللَّهِ Allāhi

of Allah

Allah's servants — a community across time, place, and every era.

17 الصَّالِحِينَ aṣ-ṣāliḥīn

the righteous

Al-ṣāliḥīn — those whose deeds are upright, those who corrected themselves and their world.

18 أَشْهَدُ Ashhadu

I bear witness

Shahāda — testimony. The most important declaration a human can make. Said with full awareness.

19 أَنْ an

that

Introducing the content of the testimony — what is witnessed.

20 لَّا إِلَـٰهَ lā ilāha

there is no god

Negation before affirmation — first clearing all false attachments before establishing the truth.

21 إِلَّا illā

except

The exception that contains everything — all the meaning is in what follows this word.

22 اللَّهُ Allāhu

Allah

The only true deity. No partners, no equals, no rivals. Pure, singular, absolute.

23 وَأَشْهَدُ wa-ashhadu

and I bear witness

A second act of witnessing — the testimony has two essential parts.

24 أَنَّ anna

that

Introducing the second article of faith.

25 مُحَمَّدًا Muḥammadan

Muhammad

The name of the final Prophet ﷺ — meaning "the praised one."

26 عَبْدُهُ ʿabduhu

is His servant

ʿAbd — servant, slave. The Prophet's first title is servitude, not prophethood.

27 وَرَسُولُهُ wa-rasūluhu

and His messenger

Rasūl — one sent with a message. Servant first, then messenger: the order matters.
